Long Answer: Most vibrators
use an internal electric motor to generate movement. The motor spins a
weight, often a large ball bearing, around inside the case. Because the
weight is off center, the centrifugal force of the spinning causes a
vibrating motion. Vibrators speeds, when given, are usually listed in
rpm, or revolutions per minute.
Massagers are often called vibrators and vice versa. The terminology may depend on the marketing intentions of the manufacturer or distributor, and how the device is designed to function. The word massager is used by manufacturers to indicate that a device is primarily designed to soothe tired and aching muscles in, say, your shoulders. It's also used by people selling and distributing sex toys when they want to be discreet. The term vibrator is used specifically for sexual devices.
Unless it is designed specifically to cradle your feet or pummel your back, most of the machines sold as massagers, such as the
Hitachi Magic Wand, Wahl massagers, and various Swedish massagers, can be adapted for use on the genitals. On the other hand, you'd be pushing it if you tried to make your
